but here is mine - a disparate swirling litany of names that reflects the idiosyncrasies of my interests: certain people whose deaths made me wince, put a lump in my throat or moistened an eye when their departures were announced; creative personalities who stood for particular, most singular, achievements; special individuals who - in the words of Woody Guthrie - “this world was lucky to see them born.”

I salute the contributions of Muhammad Ali, Mose Allison, David Bowie, Barry Brickell, Leonard Cohen, Ray Columbus, Tony Conrad, Melvin Day, Umberto Eco, Jean Fisher, Marti Friedlander, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Peter Gay, A.A. Gill, Zaha Hadid, Abbas Kiarostami, George Martin, Richard Neville, Pauline Oliveros, Jon Polito, Prince, Hilary Putnam, Alan Rickman, Leon Russell, Garry Shandling, Kenneth Snelson, Ralph Stanley, Bobby Vee, Ranginui Walker and Gene Wilder.

A heartfelt Adios; a sorrowful Good-bye.
